The Yacht Club de Monaco family including over a thousand members came together around its President HSH Prince Albert II for the annual Members Cocktail. Sixty new members were welcomed into the Club before the evening continued into the early hours with a variety of musical entertainment on a day which was also Fête de la Musique.

Stirring tribute

The Prince gave an emotional speech as he paid tribute to two exceptional men who left their mark on the Club’s history. “Allow me to spare a thought for our Commodore Gérard Brianti who departed this life before his time. An accomplished yachtsman appreciated by everyone, Gérard played an active role in our Club’s development, particularly among our young sports members. I would also like to pay tribute to Carlo Riva, Personnalité de la Mer 2005, who made such an impact with his elegance and genius on the yachting world. Two outstanding men, both pioneers and visionaries, with their eyes firmly focused on the future convinced they were living in an extraordinary period.”

Knowing the past to build the future

We too are living in an extraordinary era of adventure and technological change, as evidenced by the Monaco Solar & Electric Boat Challenge (13-15 July) being organised for the fourth year running. This meeting puts the spotlight on solar energy with an event for race boats built and driven by engineering students.

Yet while the Principality, through the Yacht Club, is committed to the future, it also fiercely protects maritime heritage and our living legacy like Tuiga, the Club’s flagship which will be sailing alongside period motor-yachts and hundred-year-old steam-yachts at Monaco Classic Week (13-17 September).

On course for Monaco Explorations Launch Party on 27th July 2017

“This precious heritage gives us the confidence to set the compass for the future. It is why, in the wake of my great-great grandfather, I wished to reconnect with his scientific explorations, initiated 120 years ago and perpetuated by Captain Cousteau.”

With the support of François Fiat, first La Belle Classe Superyachts ambassador and owner of M/V Yersin, Monaco Explorations continues a great tradition of maritime expeditions in line with the Principality’s ocean preservation policy. The campaign provides a platform for scientific research to observe and learn, but also to educate people on the threats facing our oceans.

“We will all have the honour of celebrating the departure of the first campaign on 21st July. On this occasion, we will also formalise launch of the YCM Explorers Club.”

This tight circle brings together yachtsmen/explorers, unwavering in their commitment to sail the oceans to keep us informed on the state of our planet.

Before concluding, HSH Prince Albert II presented awards to young sailors in the Sports Section who have excelled on race areas around the world in the Nacra 15, Laser and Optimist classes. All will be heading off soon to compete in the season’s top-level competitions.

True to its reputation as an organisation that brings life to Monaco’s harbour, the Club has a full and busy summer ahead, around its motto: One Spirit, One Team, One Club.
