Arsenal are entering the January transfer market and are on the lookout for players ‘in any position’, says Arsene Wenger.
The Gunners have been linked with several players, including Monaco forward Thomas Lemar and Leicester winger Riyad Mahrez.
Wenger says they are searching, but will only move to sign an ‘exceptional’ player if one becomes available.
Speaking at a press-conference ahead of their clash with Chelsea on Wednesday, Wenger said: ‘It is difficult to say, we are out there to do some things, but when is hard to say, it is not dependent on us.
‘We are open in any position for an exceptional player, it depends on injuries as well, and if we manage to extend contracts of players whose deals end in June.’
One player Arsenal will definitely not be signing in January is David Luiz. The Chelsea defender, who was dropped earlier in the season after falling out with Antonio Conte, had been linked with the Gunners, however Wenger categorically stated this information was ‘wrong’.
He also refused to speculate further on the futures of Alexis Sanchez, Mesut Ozil and Jack Wilshere, who are all out of contract in the summer.
All three can now speak to foreign clubs about a free transfer in the summer, however Wenger was bullish, saying they would sign ‘players of top quality’ should any of their stars choose to move on.
Wenger said: ‘Progress, sometimes you think you make progress, then you get knocked back. Until the deals are signed, I can’t say anything.
‘We have not lost anybody yet, if we do we will respond by signing players of top quality. This club has lost many big players, and it has always responded well.’
