Southampton have begun talks with Monaco for Argentine striker Guido Carrillo, as manager Mauricio Pellgerino looks to add firepower to his side in order to turn around their Premier League fortunes.

The 26-year-old has emerged as a target for the Saints, who are desperately looking to bring to an end their poor run of form.

Pellegrino’s side find themselves one place above the relegation zone, on goal difference alone, and need to add to their squad in order to ensure survival.

The Argentine manager has worked with his compatriot Carrillo before, coaching him at Estudiantes during the early stages of his career.

Carrillo’s form at the club caught the eyes of bigger teams and soon earned a move to the continent with renowned talent spotters Monaco.

A fee in the region of £17million is believed to be required in order for the two sides to conclude business.

Carrillo is now in his third season with the principality club, playing second fiddle to Colombian superstar Radamel Falcao.

The 26-year-old has found his chances limited as a result, though has still managed to score three goals in his last four appearances for the club.

Southampton have money to spend in the January window, following their £75million sale of Virgil van Dijk to Liverpool.

Pellegrino needs to turn things around quickly at St Mary’s, with the club currently on a nine-game winless streak.
